Attended the Aug 23 evening show. We enjoyed the cast and the set. Some of the effects were a bit silly, such as the aforementioned roman candle. We were also underwhelmed by the "crashing chandelier" which gently glided to the stage as the actors waited patiently for its arrival.

What detracts most from my rating was the sound quality. I've seen junior college productions with better sound. The orchestra sounded fine and solos weren't horrible, but anything more than one hot mic and the whole production might as well have been broadcast on a home-made transistor radio. We thought it might have been an odd acoustic anomaly at our seats, but we heard many similar complaints on the way out.

Wednesday's opening night of The Phantom of the Opera at the Keller Auditorium saw an energetic return of the longest running West End and Broadway show in history, not to mention the all-time most profitable entertainment enterprise. Heading the cast were Marni Raab as young opera star Christine Daae and Richard Todd Adams in the title role. Supporting cast were strong, with an especially amusing performance from John Whitney as Ubaldo Piangi.

Staging was appropriately eerie, with several mechanized set pieces and effective lighting, especially during scenes set in the Phantom's underground lair.

There were of course, a couple weak points. For example, seeing the Phantom shout "Don't go! Don't go" while shooting a Roman candle from his staff was a bit embarassing. Outside of the show itself, a surprising amount of the audience were quite underdressed for a show, but hey, that's Portland.

And the wonderfully Portland audience brought great energy to the performance and it was easy to see the actors feeding on our just-shy-of-rowdy entusiasm.

It's in town for a few more weeks. Don't deprive yourself, if you can go, go.
