- Sea Wolf at the Doug Fir, Nov 3
Sea Wolf played a sold out show last Saturday, in the middle of a great weekend of shows at the Doug Fir. The band (currently a five-piece) are touring in support of a new album, Old World Romance. The new album isn't a big departure from their previous work, but sounds still more full, more rich. This was definitely true for their live show, where in years past Alex Brown Church would have only had two other people with him on stage. They sounded great.
They brought Seattle locals Hey Marseilles to open the tour, and their set might have been even better than the headliners. It's been a couple years since I last had a chance to see them, and they have obviously been playing a lot and polishing their sound. They didn't sound like they were playing Beirut songs anymore, and the build-ups and break-downs were surprisingly infective. The crowd was moving as much as they were onstage.
It's funny that Portland locals Great Wilderness opened for Sea Wolf at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle, and a Seattle band opened here—It would have been an even better show if all three were on the bill. Next time?
