To the can-and-bottle collector rummaging through the bins at my apartment building Monday morning: I enjoyed our little “Good morning” chat about how nice the weather was and how busy we both seemed to be. Then I left to begin my day, and apparently you remained to take the quick-release wheels off my chained-up bicycle. (Yes, I should have does a better job of locking up.) I’m sad about the loss of the use of my bike, but even sadder to think that each time someone like you does an act like this, the world becomes worse for everyone involved. Pretty soon a neighborhood fills with hostility and suspicion, and the men and women like you are scorned by the residents and hassled by the police, and no one’s life is enhanced. And all for, what? The ten or twenty bucks you got for my two damn bicycle wheels?
