Castanets, Alameda, Old Light

When: Thu., Sept. 4, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
After taking a slight detour as Raymond Byron and the White Freighter, Ray Raposa returns this year with the project he started more than a decade ago: Castanets. Decimation Blues is another folk-leaning record loaded with bells and whistles, all built around Raposa's tender vocals. It's a sometimes-weird amalgam that leads to some interesting moments, although "interesting" comes in both good and bad. Drum machines and synthesizers come and go in songs like "My Girl Comes to the City" and "Be My Eyes," sometimes distracting from his sad-bastard tales and even sadder vocals. One thing is certain: It'll be interesting to hear how it all plays out in the live experience. MARK LORE
