Kalup Linzy looks far too good in a wig and sequined swimsuit. The sharp, fearless video artist has been writing, editing, directing, and starring for the last six years in a series of soap opera episodes chronicling the misadventures and salacious affairs of a melodramatic black family. Linzy’s hilarious dialogue and drag apparel pokes good fun at gender and modern love, but the work is far from drag shtickiness. Linzy creates compelling narratives and excels at forming strong, unique, engaging characters in the space of a few moments onscreen. It’s a pleasure to watch him morph throughout his works, from jealous matron to discontented clubgoer to Katonya, a relationship-jumping woman who prefers her new boyfriends to her humdrum job. Somehow Linzy hits each character spot-on, handling himself as gracefully in a high-class dining room as under a blanket, faking an orgasm doggy-style. Despite the frequent character changes and gender confusion, the videos altogether feel cohesive, drawn together by their distinct dramatic tone and string of ever-escalating absurdity. SM
