Nestled in the Hotel deLuxe, the Driftwood is small and barely lit, but with a mid-century charm that brings to mind cigarette cases and pocket squares (this being Portland though, there will always be some oaf in a Ducks shirt). If you're playing at being this type of grownup, you should have cocktails, and Driftwood specializes in champagne varieties, while also doing a nice line of Manhattans. Or you may want to try one of the spirit samplers with local gins or whiskeys ($14). If you need sustenance, a shared pan of the forest mushrooms is a must. And with a happy hour that only pauses between 6:30-9:30 pm, you can live the high life on a budget. MJ SKEGG

Restaurant Details

Located within the retro-fab Hotel deLuxe the Driftwood Room is a cozy homage to a brighter, shinier, TechnicolorTM yesteryear of highballs, ladies scarves and tuxedos. They serve a concise, relatively affordable bar menu if you're feeling pangs and attractive cinema-themed cocktails if you feel parched. Hey is that Rock and Doris over there? No honey, you've too many cosmos.

Happy Hour Info: The Driftwood Room at the Hotel deLuxe (a fever dream for lovers of classic film) isn’t cheap, but it’s one of the comfiest, loveliest places in town to drink—the bar is literally cushioned for the delicate elbows of leaning patrons, and the happy hour menu’s heavy on full-fat delights and fizzy champagne cocktails. If you like a good French 75, power up for its Driftwood cousin, the Rose-Colored Glasses. The mac ’n’ cheese ($6) is a filling bowl of cheese-slathered al dente corkscrew pasta, and the fries ($4) are fully customizable, with a dizzying array of toppings (including peppers ’n’ pork lardons OMG I AM DEAD). Best of all, you can take your drinks into the deLuxe’s lobby, with its sink-on-in armchairs and great lighting for reading. That’s right, I’m telling you to go solo and bring a book. You should give yourself a present every day. MEGAN BURBANK
