Basically, Reed's chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy is hosting a debate on national drug policy and the war on drugs. The debate will be between Dr. Kevin Sabet, former senior speech writer to two White House Drug Czars and an advocate for the continuation of the war on drugs, and Kris Krane, Executive Director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy and advocate for alternatives to current policy. It will be moderated by Dean Steinberger, a professor of Political Science and Dean of Faculty at Reed College. Topics addressed will include: decriminalization and legalization; punishment and enforcement of drug law; socioeconomic effects of drug policy; pharmaceuticals, alcohol, and cigarettes and their status as drugs; the scheduling system and its efficiency at addressing the risks associated with substances; medical research with scheduled substances; tax and regulation; and educational programs, such as DARE. There will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions as well.
