Celebration of Chocolate, Powell's Books for Cooks and Gardeners, 3747 SE Hawthorne, Sat Oct 29, 11 am, free

Chocolate addicts unite! Whether you like it milky, dark, baked into cookies, or slathered on a lover, chocolate has many uses and is always delicious. Today's festivity celebrates sweet, sweet chocolate love with tastings and demonstrations by local chocolate makers Pix Patisserie, Bakery Bar, Sahagun Chocolates, and Cherry Country. Michael Recchiuti, renowned chocolatier and author of Chocolate Obsession, will join in the fun at 1 pm. As an added treat, Powell's is offering 30 percent off all chocolate-making books and supplies at this event. CSB

Beaterfest 2000, Beaterville Café, 2201 N Killingsworth, Sat Oct 29, dawn 'til dusk, free

For years now, Beaterville, in addition to being a tasty breakfast spot, has been a gathering spot for the Beater Car Club, as well as quirky "art cars." This weekend, the joint turns 11, and to celebrate it's featuring a veritable "beatdown," with multitudes of decked-out vehicles for the curious spectator. In addition, you can check out a special auto-themed gallery featuring the art of over half a dozen artists. Grab a drink at the beer garden and fill up on yummy food from the café (vegan, vegetarian, and meat-eater friendly!). And don't forget to enjoy the live local bands and DJs that will be playing all throughout the event. CSB

America's Test Kitchen Special Appearance, Powell's Books for Cooks and Gardeners, 3747 SE Hawthorne, Wed Nov 2, 7 pm, free

America's Test Kitchen is currently the most popular public television cooking show, now in its fifth season. Show host and founder of Cook's Magazine, Chris Kimball is coming to Portland to present his brand new cookbook, The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. This book "dishes" up over 1,200 foolproof recipes even the cooking novice can't screw up. So come out and meet one of the food world's biggest players. CSB
