higgins is a treat. it's a place of simple elegance. very professional wait staff, well-made cocktails. the menu is fresh and imaginative and constantly changing. for cheaper fare, go to the bar and order off the bar menu.
sat in the bar, allergic to wheat and dairy, avid meat eater. the witty bartender conspired with the chef to invent a meal to my liking. fucking perfect. they went above and beyond to create one of the best meals of recent memory.
The best thing about Higgins is the bar, for its smartly dressed barmen and Manhattan formal atmosphere. Sure, the white-linen restaurant is nice when you have to meet the editor of the Oregonian and he's offering you a job, for example, or perhaps, your lawyer. But on a Friday night I'm into the bar. I love to go in and split a burger (which isn't called a burger—it's called minced beef in a bun, or something) with my wife. It is the best, most flavorful burger in Portland at $12. Maybe that and a bowl of the soup. Have an O'Douls and relax. Also, everyone else in there is classy. You can wear a tweed jacket without getting arrested by the fashion police. A tie, even. A freaking tie. People won't mind. Go on...
