Portland police this week are investigating an unusual officer-involved shooting. A man identified as Craig Boehler, 46, was found dead in a Southeast Portland home ravaged by flames that erupted during a shootout with officers early Tuesday, November 23. Police arrived after the home's owner reported gunshots and a domestic disturbance. After evacuating two of Boehler's relatives from the home, officers also found themselves under fire. Boehler kept shooting even after tear gas was launched into the house, stopping only after a police officer fired back. It was about then that flames were spotted in the rear of the house. As of press time, the cause of the fire, as well as what exactly killed Boehler, were under investigation. DENIS C. THERIAULT

The Willamette Pedestrian Coalition released a major study of the safety of pedestrians in the Portland metro area. The study involved walking around downtown Portland, Sunnyside, and various suburbs as well as surveying 540 locals about their walking habits. Asked what percent of transportation dollars should be spent on pedestrian projects, the average survey respondent said 20 percent. Currently, Oregon spends only 1.5 percent of its federal transportation dollars on pedestrian projects like sidewalks and crosswalks. Pedestrian Coalition Director Steph Routh said that the biggest concern for people is safe crossings. "We had assumed that the big one would be the need for sidewalks, but really people just want to be able to cross the street," says Routh. Pedestrian deaths in Oregon are up 80 percent over last year. SARAH MIRK

Kiss your sweet crunk juice goodbye: The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) banned seven alcoholic energy drinks in a special meeting Saturday, November 20. Following a flood of controversy about the dangers of Four Loko—including an impending US Food and Drug Administration crackdown that prompted the 'Loko to promise to remove caffeine from its beverage—the OLCC voted to exile Four Loko along with Core High Gravity HG Green and Orange, Core Spiked Lemon Lime, Moonshot, Joose, and Max because they "contain the 'unsafe food additive' of caffeine."
