For the third segment in New American Art Union’s Couture series, Jacqueline Ehlis heads toward more quiet and formal territory than her predecessors. After a pair of impressive solo shows at the defunct SAVAGE Gallery established her as a formidable painter, Ehlis has been investigating the effects of light on various materials, moving farther from pictorial space into the realm of sculpture. In Serenade, faintly painted acrylic canvases mingle with reflective surfaces (such as polished aluminum and stainless steel) and video projections for an exhibition that uses the most basic visual phenomenon—light, reflection, etc.—to create deceptively sophisticated work.
