The details of Jess Collins’ life are plenty fascinating. After working on the Manhattan Project, Collins soured on developing nuclear weaponry, moved to San Francisco, met his life partner, the Beat poet Robert Duncan, opened the King Ubu Gallery with the painter Harry Jacobus, and devoted the remainder of his life to producing every conceivable manner of art. This traveling exhibition presents an impressive survey of his work (including his stunning collages) alongside contextualizing ephemera. Given that Collins—or simply “Jess,” as he called himself—is something of an artist’s artist, To and From the Printed Page should serve the necessary purpose of taking his art to a much wider audience.
