Joyce Carol Oates

When: Tue., April 19, 7 p.m. 2011
Tirelessly prolific and genre-straddling author Joyce Carol Oates appears in the flesh, at Powell’s, reading from A Widow’s Story: A Memoir. Three years ago, Oates’s husband died suddenly after being admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. This book is Oates’s accumulation of mourning, her attempt to recall and cope with the crushing, unexpected death and its aftermath; it’s a book exhausted with grief, but Oates’s charisma and lucid prose make her a must-see.
