For decades, Pittsburgh’s two WAMO radio stations—AM and FM—broadcasted to the city’s African American community, and choreographer Kyle Abraham grew up listening to the rich blend of music they offered, from oldies to cutting-edge hiphop and beyond. The two stations fell victim to media company mergers and changes in format during the ’90s and ’00s, and Abraham’s seven-person dance performance The Radio Show examines what happens, to both individuals and the community at large, when fundamental forms of communication fall silent. Set to a collage of music and familiar radio noises—call signs, static, etc.—the Abraham.In.Motion ensemble moves in both formalized and fluid expressions of contemporary dance, driven by the rhythms that soundtracked Abraham’s upbringing.
