Maria Hassabi, born in Cyprus and now living in the US, is a contemporary choreographer best known for collage-like compositions that harness an intriguing mix of theatricality and pop culture. She has presented work at some of the more innovative (albeit trendy) performance spaces on the East Coast (PS122, the Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop), and now brings her investigative choreography to TBA. With SoloShow, Hassabi presents the female form as living sculpture, exploring its motions, punctuating and illuminating its iconic nature through images of modernity and art history. Here’s the thing: If you like contemporary dance, you’ll love this. If it makes you yawn, this may make you fall asleep. ND
