THURSDAY, AUGUST 18

FAIR'S FARE—For the second year running, the Deschutes Street Fare block party celebrates the important things in life: beer (from Deschutes, natch), food (from a panoply of local food carts), and music (the Builders and the Butchers, Lost Lander, and more). Most important of all, it's a benefit for Morrison Child and Family Services, so eat, drink, and be merry. NL
Deschutes Brewery , 210 NW 11th, 5-9 pm, $10 (includes food & beer taster)

SABAS!—Welcome home, Arvydas Sabonis. The greatest Blazers big man this side of Bill Walton is returning to Rip City to celebrate his well-deserved induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Despite Odenesque knees and ankles, the Lithuanian star came to Portland at age 31 and gave the Blazers seven years of excellence in the paint. Raise a shot of vodka in honor of the great Sabas. EAC
Pioneer Courthouse Square, 701 SW 6th, 1 pm, all ages, FREE

FRIDAY, AUGUST 19

BLUEBERRY PIE—Tonight marks the last installment of the outdoor Flicks on the Bricks movie series, featuring the classic, Stephen King-penned Stand by Me. Featuring youthful performances from River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, and—oh, hey—that guy from Leverage! MS
w/Jacob Merlin; Pioneer Courthouse Square, 701 SW 6th, dusk, FREE, all ages

WATTAGE—The brilliantly offbeat Reggie Watts is one of the only tolerable musical comedians working today. He won over Portland at TBA in 2007; since then, his utterly original combo of free-associative comedy, beatboxing, and vocal virtuosity has made him a staple of the comedy and late-night circuits. AH
Helium Comedy Club, 1510 SE 9th, Fri-Sat 7:30 & 10 pm, $22-27

SATURDAY, AUGUST 20

RIVALRY!—The Timbers' up-and-down season continues this week with a rivalry match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Currently they trail the Timbers in the Western Conference, so it's a perfect time for our boys to drop the axe on these guys and get a serious win under their belts. WSH

BDAY—Hey, Plazm, it's your 20th birthday! It's your 30th magazine issue! I want to watch music, art, and performance, with you, Plazm! With acts like Strength, Atole, and Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner, it's gonna be a fun party and Plazm, baby, you deserve it. SS
Disjecta, 8371 N Interstate, 8 pm, $5-15

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21

STAR QUEST—Defeated by the ridiculous crowds at this summer's Trek in the Park shows? Here's one last chance to catch their performance of the classic Trek episode "Mirror Mirror"—and it'll be followed by the great 1999 comedy Galaxy Quest, a better Star Trek movie than, like, half of the actual Star Trek movies! EH
Bagdad Theater, 3702 SE Hawthorne, 8 pm, $6, 21+

COOL FOR SCHOOL—Chances are your fondest school-day memories don't involve sitting at a desk, but if you went to outdoor school, it's a different story, one filled with dirty boogers, slug-related dares, and bad skits—what childhood's all about. Tonight's music—featuring Typhoon's Kyle Morton!—is a benefit to keep the Multnomah County Outdoor School afloat. MS
w/Your Rival, Profcal, the Shades; Backspace, 115 NW 5th, 4 pm, $5, all ages

MONDAY, AUGUST 22

HOT ROCKS—Kick out the jams with an overpacked bill of gunky garage good times, including the red-line blitzkrieg pop of the Bay Area's Shannon and the Clams and the ferocious punk blues of Chicago sister-brother duo White Mystery. NL
w/the Men, Milk Music, Hurry Up; East End, 203 SE Grand, 9 pm, $8

SPOON GAGGING—1983's Valley Girl has a lot going for it: A killer '80s new wavey soundtrack, the first breakout performance by Nic Cage (before he went all batpoop crazy), and an absolutely darling, heartfelt story about young love. Romcoms don't get much better than this. WSH
Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton, Sun-Tues 7 & 9 pm, $6

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23

PAPERCUTS—Nikki McClure's paper-cut show Cutting Her Own Path opens this week at the Museum of Contemporary Craft. This show will display a spread of McClure's work since her start in 1996. AZ
Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 NW Davis, Tues-Sat 11 am-6 pm, through Oct 29

JAZZ—Despite the shrill cries and tear-streaked cheeks of Bieberites the world over, the great Esperanza Spalding took home the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2010. Once a fledging musical prodigy in Noise for Pretend, Spalding has become one of the biggest names in jazz and can count the president of the United States as one of her biggest fans. Not bad for a kid from Northeast Portland. EAC
Gerding Theater at the Armory, 128 NW 11th, 7:30 pm, $35-100, all ages

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24

LADY JAINA—You might know the music of Portland songwriter Nick Jaina, but you've never heard it quite like this before: On his new album The Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Dead, each song is voiced by a different female singer, including Laura Gibson, Jolie Holland, and Corrina Repp. The result is some of the finest work of Jaina's career. AH
w/Dovekins, Run on Sentence; Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi, 9 pm, $8-10

HAUER—Set in the far-off future of 2008, the 1992 sci-fi action flick Split Second pits the inimitable Rutger Hauer against a murderin' alien! It also kicks off the Clinton Street Theater's new Flat Top Film Series, which'll offer all sorts of pulpy action flicks on 35mm in the months to come. EH
