Minneapolis-based queer choreographer Karen Sherman possesses many talents: dance, design, performance, lasso-spinning, trapeze, woodworking… and probably others we have no idea about. In her performance of One with Others, Sherman uses almost all of these attributes as she fuses dance, spoken word, and lots of spare lumber to create a work that digs deep into how we communicate—but in a way that tips the sacred cow of artsy-fartsy dance. Using lumber as prosthetic extensions of her body, Sherman is clumsy, loveable, and funny as she tells stories, interacts with her two less-trained partners, and blasts the snooty concept of “art” out of the water.
