Maybe it’s because I’m something of a pop-happy philistine when it comes to visual art, but I’ve always thought of painters as being delicate, measured creatures, hermetically ensconced in sterile studios with their easels. As evidenced by their annoying use of capitalization, though, PAINTALLICA aim to change my backwards perception, creating “an installation that’s equal parts process, product, and performance.” In taking over a to-be-announced space, this collective of artists (which includes Craig Thompson, creator of the brilliant Blankets and Good-bye, Chunky Rice), PAINTALLICA will revel in and share the usually private act of creation—and while paintings, objects, and whatever else they feel so inclined to make will result, the real joy sounds like it’ll be in catching a glimpse of the stuff getting made.
