Our conception of fairytales has more to do with Disney’s happy endings than with the terrifying morality tales of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. Little girls grow up not with a healthy fear of dissolving into sea foam, but instead knowing every last word to “Part of Your World” (one of the whiniest songs ever written). Pan Pan Theatre’s The Crumb Trail promises to revisit fairytales as a source of anxiety, with a deconstructed take on Hansel and Gretel that updates the don’t-eat-the-candy cautionary tale to include internet predators and the construction of self—a decidedly post-modern revision.
