Returning to Portland after La Démangeaison des Ailes was performed as part of TBA:06, Philippe Quesne’s Vivarium Studio has two pieces in this year’s festival. L’Effet de Serge sees actor Gaëtan Voerc’h take the stage, set with little more than a ping-pong table and a sliding glass door, to revel in the minutiae of compulsive behavior. Serge invites friends over for brief, puzzling exhibits—a firecracker here, a flicking of lights there—but only after going through a series of mundane pleasantries. As Serge asks to take one friend’s coat, or offers a drink to another, he’s committing as much of an artificial performance as when he dons a spacesuit and shines a flashlight under his face.
