Portland Center Stage continues its tradition of season-opening musicals with Ragtime, the adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's turn-of-the-century historical novel of the same name. Portland Center Stage's intelligent, restrained production goes a long way toward correcting weaknesses in the script, which glibly splices together stories of triumph, and despair among three oppressed groups (women, blacks, immigrants. Ragtime's plot is overstuffed, the songs trite, the politics oversimplified, and the moral equivalencies facile at best—but the fact remains that in the wake of the economic crisis and the health care debate, more people than ever are contemplating what we talk about when we talk about the American Dream. PCS should be commended for staging a production that speaks directly to the world we live in—even if it does speak in clichés. AH
