The Shanghai is in the heart of Portland's party-town, located mostly underneath Berbati's Pan with the entrance, upstairs lounge and outdoor seating on the corner. The subterranean portion of the bar is actually part of Portland's infamous Shanghai Tunnels. The Shanghai can get pretty crazy, which can fulfill that fun downtown party need. Stiff drinks and affordable Pan-Asian and American food is served as well.

First bar that i ever went to in Portland and it's still definitely a favorite. Food is great and original while the beer variety is kinda weak. Its always a strange mix of folks that come in there which is always interesting. The bathrooms are enough to make a janitor cringe, but hey it's the Shanghi. Service is usually good considering the flash flood of weekend business. Get rid of the video crack.
My first trip to the tunnel...kinda disappointing, as it is an institution, or so I'm told. I dig that it's underground, and has the cool history, but the service SUCKED, and this was on a Sunday night no less (aka not a busy night). We both got food, which was also kind of a dud. My black bean/garden burger fell apart when I tried to eat it, though it did have lots of fresh lettuce/toms on it... it also kinda disagreed with me, and I tend to have a tough gut. My gal's stir fry thing just about burned her friggin' mouth out, on her penultimate bite, some hidden nugget of ultra-spice. Drinks were good, but nothing special.
It did have a pool table and three pinballs, though.
There's better bars to be had.
