LOOK, I'm no slouch in the foreign film game. I've wrangled my share of grammarless subtitles. Saw a Japanese movie once that didn't have a samurai in it. So take that into account when I say I had no idea what the fuck was going on in Let the Bullets Fly.
The film's trailer is cut to look like the extremely awesome The Good, the Bad, the Weird, so you could be forgiven for expecting a goofy kung-fu western. It's not. What action scenes there are manage to be both joyless and cartoonishly gory. It's like someone saw a Stephen Chow film and thought, "How can I do that wrong?"
The plot is... I don't know. There's Sniveling Comic Relief (Ge You), Snidely Whiplash (Chow Yun-Fat), and Super Awesome Good Guy Who's Super Good at Everything (Jiang Wen, who also wrote, directed, and produced, natch). Everyone pretends to be everyone else, and the good guys kill more people than the bad guys. I think? They all wear masks. Chow Yun-Fat plays his own fake double.
Maybe it’s a parody? If it is, it’s just not one I could parse. Or one that I liked. And I liked that Fellini fi lm about Fellini making a Fellini film.
