Closing This Week

Moby Dick: The Musical
This is not actually a musical version of Moby Dick. Rather, it's a play about a girls' school putting on a musical version of Moby Dick, which sounds slightly more appealing. Artists Repertory Theatre, 1516 SW Alder, 241-1278, Fri 8 pm, Sat 8 pm, 11 pm, Sun 2 pm, $16-20

Current Runs

A Midsummer Night's Dream
Proof that the depressing trend of updating Shakespeare to make his work "accessible" may never die, Lakewood presents a version of Midsummer Night's Dream that's set in California and soundtracked by the Beatles, the Doors, and the Beach Boys. Lakewood Theatre Company, 368 S State St, Lake Oswego, 635-3901, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, Sun 7 pm, $22-24

Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Wade McCullum revisits his Drammy-winning role as Hedwig in Triangle Productions' encore run of the wildly popular musical about an East German transvestite who fronts an unsuccessful rock band. If you missed it the first time, now's your chance to see what all the fuss is about. Artists Repertory Theatre, 1516 SW Alder, 241-1278, Opens Thurs, runs Thurs-Sat 8 pm, $20-38

Private Eyes
The convoluted plot of Private Eyes follows a husband and wife who are costarring in a play about infidelity. The wife, Lisa (Brooke Fletcher), happens to be having an affair with their director, Adrian (Gary Norman), while husband Matthew (Andrew Dannorn) suspects he's being cuckolded but is afraid to confirm his suspicion. Matthew is in therapy, and in his sessions with his shrink (Dallas Harp), his memories and fears come to life onstage. I wasn't particularly taken with the script, with its heavy-handed utilization of the play-within-a-therapy-session-within-a-play framework; and I was even less excited about Jessica Zodrow's direction, which seemed to insist that this play is a farce, despite all textual evidence to the contrary. The play is undeniably a dark comedy, but the 2Boards production reads the humor so broadly that it obscures any emotional effect the work might have had. AH Theater! Theatre!, 3430 SE Belmont, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, Sun 4 pm, $10
