This weekend, it's time to take in the trash. The semi-regular Supertrash Film Fest has returned, boasting 72 hours' worth of the bawdiest cine-rubbish you're likely to see in one sitting, with films ranging from funny Italian horror (1985's Dario Argento-penned Demons) to the downright disturbing (1978's Grease).
Arguably the best part of this Supertrash program is Saturday's Floating World Comics' Animation Fest, which promises to be a feast for the senses—or, actually, more of a full-scale assault on the senses, as seizure-inducing eye candy comes screaming into your brain. Highlights include Woof Woof Woof, a Canadian short that builds layers of quiet, dreamy animationscapes into a work of subtle beauty, and the fantastic French short Orgesticulanismus, with its effortless frenetic energy.
On Sunday, stop-motion animation mastermind Bruce Bickford will be in attendance for the screening of his amazing Prometheus' Garden. Best known for his work with Frank Zappa in such films as The Amazing Mr. Bickford and Baby Snakes, Bickford's work is painstaking and surreal. While I had nary a clue as to what was going on in Prometheus' Garden (something about the myth of Prometheus creating humans from clay... and a lot of clay disembowelings), this might've been due to my relative sobriety at the time. It's a fucked-up trip you won't want to miss.
The rest of the fest is chockablock with cheesy nostalgia like Labyrinth, John Carpenter's gang-revenge flick Assault on Precinct 13, 1964's Zulu (featuring a young Michael Caine), and free screenings of The Care Bears Movie and some Smurfs episodes. Also included in the eclectic mix: Italian giallo flick Autopsy (1975), and a hefty dose of lowbrow trailers. As they say, "One person's trash...."
Sorry there are no upcoming showtimes for Hempsters: Plant the Seed, Supertrash: Assault on Precinct 13, Supertrash: Autopsy, Supertrash: Demons, Supertrash: Floating World Comics Animation Fest, Supertrash: Grease, Supertrash: Labyrinth, Supertrash: Prometheus' Garden, Supertrash: Trailers, or Supertrash: Zulu
