* Feathered Friends
The folks at Motel seem to have gathered just about every artist in Portland for this exhibit celebrating small birds. Each artist was asked to make a work no larger than 6 X 6 inches, and about a hundred took up the challenge, including Brad Adkins, Chandra Bocci, and Trish Grantham. * Vacant
Vacant is a sort of touring ultra-hip retail store that travels from major city to major city, spending one month in each one. At each teeming metropolis, Vacant offers a fresh blend of art exhibits, retail products, and music events. It's constantly changing, so check out the website for more details. Don't wait too long, though; this mysterious conglomeration of creative expression and capitalism is only here for a few more weeks. Luke Buser & Minnie Jardine
Local shutterbugs work it. Buser composes montages from found photographs in magazines, and also original prints. Jardine's weapon of choice is a Holga camera, a cheap plastic device that allows light to leak into the shots, giving them an intriguing, old-timey softness. * Paul Frank
Frank is the creator of Julius, a cute monkey that now appears on accessories, clothes, and home furnishings throughout the land. If you're a fan of the ubiquitous primate now's your chance to get your favorite Julius love seat signed by the master himself. * Video Games and Art
Portland has finally hit the big time with this new space that combines the wonders of computer gaming with fine art. Backspace has 18 state-of-the-art DSL-connected computers alongside 13 different art exhibits from local artists, including Groshong Erikson, and Ezra Clayton-Daniels, graphic novelist extraordinaire.
