Chris Bennett
Facing a panorama of technological options unthinkable just 15 years ago, many photographers are looking to the medium's history to mine antique, laborious, and frequently toxic processes of creating photographs. Chris Bennett (of Newspace Center for Photography) is one such artist, creating tintypes in the manner of post-Civil War photographers. Dana Dart-McLean
Decorator's Proposal for Interior of Lobby is local artist Dart-McLean's first solo show in Portland, although she's shown in way-impressive places like the Christine Burgin and the Wrong Galleries. Her "paintings and drawings emerge from the interstices of personal and collective memories of both fictional and factual recollections." Whatever. The paintings are totally worth seeing. Fawn Krieger
New York artist Fawn Krieger drops in with a great set of paintings on magazine pages and inkjet prints of furniture and rafts hovering over idealized landscapes from travel magazines and cheesecake landscape spreads. Krieger's senses of color and humor reveal themselves smartly in each piece. She's currently collaborating with Tracy + the Plastics and is in two Brooklyn shows as we speak. Grey Area
Local artist and curator TJ Norris curated this one for Guestroom, and he invited artists such as David Eckard, Laura Fritz, Daniel Duford, and Abi Spring to "explore vacillating streams of consciousness, a mysterious epicenter where mind-over-matter is materially questioned." Great Painters in Brescia from the Renaissance to the 18th Century
Brescia, located just to the northwest of Florence and Venice, was upwind of the great Renaissance, and produced a wealth of masterful altarpieces, frescoes, and devotional paintings. Paper Trail
Cynthia Nawalinki "burns, cuts, and paints on maps," while Mar Gorman "uses old medical texts, dictionary pages, and handwritten journals" for collages, handmade books, and drawings.
