Dark Times
Oakland's Chris Duncan's site-specific installation incorporates incredibly dense paintings that reference the Big Bang, a "string burst" of light rays, and a quasi-molecular sculpture based on a traditional African art form. Motel, NW Couch between 5th & 6th, through Sept 30

Fourteen Artists/Fourteen Years
For the past 14 years, Mahaffey Fine Art has served as Portland's premier fine-art printmaking studio. This exhibit culls 65 prints from Mahaffey's history, including works from Hans Haacke, Robert Morris, Jene Highstein, and Tony Fitzpatrick. Portland Art Museum, 1219 SW Park, 226-2811, Sept 30-Jan 14, $6-10

Haunted
In what looks to be one of the most promising exhibits of the fall, the cavernous concrete rooms of Disjecta become Haunted in this gathering of installations from international artists. Murals, performances, video pieces, and sculptural installations overtake the clammy galleries, with artists from as far as Switzerland, Germany, and Cuba coming in to creep you out with work that's never been seen before in Portland. Many of the artists will be on hand for the opening reception, so get a jumpstart on Halloween with a truly interesting haunted experience. Disjecta, 230 E Burnside, opens Sat Sept 30, 7 pm; through Oct 29

SmallWorks
This fundraiser for Portland Modern is made of works of art, each sized at about one square foot, made by artists whose work has appeared in Portland Modern. All the pieces are on sale for $100 each, and come from people like Marne Lucas, Melia Donovan, Shawn Records, Liz Haley, Holly Andres, and many more. Portland Modern Window Project, 1715 NW Lovejoy, through Sept 30

Supata Biswas
The work of Indian-born British artist Sutapa Biswas often explores issues of gender as well as cultural and ethnic identity. But the work included in Birdsong is hardly so overtly topical. Instead, the show's paintings and two films succeed on a strictly aesthetic level. In the film, "Magnesium Bird" (2004), the artist simultaneously ignites 100 tiny sculptures of birds, made out of flammable magnesium tape. The fires, like dreams, are extinguished shortly after they are ignited, but, for Biswas, that brief, beautiful flare offers redemption—however short-lived. (JM) Cooley Gallery at Reed College, 3203 SE Woodstock, 777-7790, through Oct 8
