Young Jean Lee is one of the few artists who performed at TBA during Mark Russell’s tenure as artistic director (2005-2008) to return under the new direction of Cathy Edwards. Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, presented in 2007, was a button-pushing piece of theater seemingly designed to make audiences uncomfortable (fair enough, of course), commenting with particular acerbity on the way Asian women are depicted in the media and perceived in our culture. With The Shipment, the Korean American artist turns her attention to the black experience, creating a work that aims to explore African American identity. A Korean American artist presents a piece about black Americans in predominately white Portland—and promises that it’s going to be funny? It should, at the very least, be interesting. AH
