Maybe Alta should sponsor? So meta...
2
This is such a disapointing development. On the plus side, contractors will get paid for an additional year, and they're mostly based locally :/

BIKES!!!

(Good work Dirk. The motto here is A.B.T.A.B: Always Be Talking About Bikes. This is good Dirk work.)

On another note, this program will fail.
4
On the same day Dutch Care Bear introduces himself, his very next Blogtown post is about bikes. Are we being trolled?
5
Yes Allan, when the problem is that you're $3 million in the hole, it is a good thing to pay contractors for another year of ramp-up.
6
I feel like all the bicycle tweets I had ready have officially been scooped by Dirk.
7
I have supreme confidence that the city's estimate of the operating revenue shortfall will be extremely accurate. The city has such a good track record on these sorts of things.

And as for Alta Planning getting this gig, wow, talk about outta left field!
8
GOOD THING HE WRITES ABOUT BIKES.

AND IT WAS GOOD BAIT FOR A CLASSIC BLABBY "IT SOUNDS KINDA DUMB TO ME SO I WILL BLINDLY ASSERT THAT IT WILL FAIL."
9
Dammit, Blabby, why do you have to be so negative? And, in this case, so almost-certainly-correct?

Dump the "smart-dock" approach to bikeshare and go with the "smart-lock" approach. Advantages of "smart-lock":

> Lower up-front cost ( Lower operating cost
> More flexible
> Is an open system (can be integrated with local rental companies)
> Is the future

It seems like it kind of rains a lot here. I'm not sure this is a super idea. "If you launch in September, you get a month of good cycling." Then 90% of the bikes sit rusting in the rain until May?
12
^^no, they get ridden in the rain until May. Then we have May day!

Minneapolis did it as a non-profit. It worked great and they expand as they can to satisfy growing interest. Their sponsors included Blue Cross-Blue Shield and a federal grant to fund a 3.2 million dollar startup in a much larger metropolitan area.

Good luck Portland. Get your head out of your A-hole and get with the times.
14
expansion of Capital Bikeshare projected to be between $8,265/bike and $8,900/bike.
