Since its conception in the late '60s metal music has branched off and diversified so many times that "metal" is as large an umbrella term as "rock" or "hip-hop" or "alternative". This interactive Map of Metal by graphic artist Patrick Galbraith and “metal historian” Nick Grant is the closest thing I've ever seen to Metal 101. Encompassing every metal offshoot and subgenre I can think of it's really a wonderful primer to a musical style that has a pretty daunting scope.
