It is with very heavy heart that I must make the following announcement: Our lovely, hilarious, and award-winning art director Scrappers is moving from the Mercury, and on to greener pastures. On the downside, we'll miss his insane creativity, great attitude, and top notch work ethic. On the upside, he's not getting a new job at City Hall, Jeff Cogen's office, or the Oregonian. So there's that. Scraps will be with us for at least another joyous month, which means we'll still have plenty of awkward, too-long hugs and time to interview some new candidates for his position.

WILL THAT CANDIDATE BE YOU?!? (Or someone you know?) Check out the following ad and see!

ART DIRECTOR NEEDED

The Portland Mercury is searching for an experienced editorial Art Director. Considered one of the best-designed alternative newsweeklies in the country, this is a dream opportunity for candidates with vision and ambition. From choosing the weekly cover art, to managing a talented team of designers, to working with our spirited editorial staff on design, presentation, and conceptual issues—this position demands brilliant creativity, while working quickly and calmly under deadline pressure.
Responsible for the overall design quality of the publication, the successful candidate will be well versed in CS4 or higher (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), OSX, social media, basic HTML, web optimization, have experience commissioning quality photography and illustration, and be able to forge and foster relationships with local and national artists. Due to the fast-paced nature of the position, good prioritizing and accurate multitasking are necessary. Enthusiasm, professionalism, people skills, and a sparkling sense of humor are a must. This is a full-time position, with competitive salary and benefits. Evening and occasional weekend hours are not a regular component of the weekly schedule, but not entirely unheard of.
Interested applicants should electronically submit resume, portfolio, web links, and cover letter to artdirectorjob@portlandmercury.com or via snail mail to “Art Director Job,” c/o Rob Crocker, Portland Mercury, 605 NE 21st Ave, Suite 200, Portland OR 97232.
