"The Little Train" has officially arrived in Portland.

As expected, the Timbers announced today that they've signed 19-year-old Colombian forward Jose Adolfo Valencia as a young Designated Player. From the press release:

Valencia, who becomes Portland’s second Designated Player, shined for Colombia’s U-20 National Team in 2011, helping the team to the 2011 Toulon Tournament championship and a quarterfinal finish in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Regarded as one of Colombia’s top young players, Valencia made his professional debut at the age of 16 and played four seasons (2008-11) for Colombian first-division club Independiente Santa Fe.

Portland coach John Spencer called Valencia "powerful and quick" and even offered a glimpse into how he'll handle the young talent whose nickname—El Trencito—pays homage to his father, two-time Colombian World Cupper Adolfo Valencia: "It is important to give him time to settle into a new culture and country and not put too much pressure on him too soon; he has tremendous potential," Spencer said.
