It's with heavy heart that I must announce the departure of Mercury art director/sweetheart Suji Allen. She's heading off to San Francisco after scoring a sweet web design job and to regain contact with her family... AND WE'LL MISS HER! She brought a sharp, very creative aesthetic take to the paper and website, as well as made some of the most fanfuckingtastic bundt cakes I've ever eaten. Bon voyage, Suji! I've really loved working with you. You're a peach!

And I guess you all know what that means! WE'RE LOOKING TO HIRE A NEW ART DIRECTOR! Here's the ad we're slipping into next week's paper—but I'd appreciate it if you would pass it along to your talented friends. (Did you notice the stress I placed on "talented"? Cool.)

The Portland Mercury is searching for an experienced editorial Art Director. Considered one of the best-designed alternative newsweeklies in the country, this is a dream opportunity for candidates with vision and ambition. From choosing the weekly cover art, to managing a talented team of designers, to working with our spirited editorial staff on design, presentation, and conceptual issues—this position demands brilliant creativity, while working quickly and calmly under deadline pressure.

Responsible for the overall design quality of the publication, the successful candidate will be well versed in CS5 (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), OSX, social media, basic HTML, web optimization, have experience commissioning quality photography and illustration, and be able to forge and foster relationships with local and national artists. Due to the fast-paced nature of the position, good prioritizing and accurate multitasking are necessary. Enthusiasm, professionalism, people skills, and a sparkling sense of humor are a must. This is a full-time position, with competitive salary and benefits. Evening and occasional weekend hours are not a regular component of the weekly schedule, but not entirely unheard of. We work hard—and we have a lot of fun!
