... no, wait! They don't walk into a bar! They make a movie! "Anomalisa is a stop-motion animated film written by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)," says the Kickstarter, and it'll presumably be directed by Kaufman as well, and executive produced by Community's Dan Harmon and that dude who plays Starburns. The 40-minute-long film is "about a man crippled by the mundanity of his life," which certainly sounds chipper and upbeat and in the Kaufman mold. As for why they want you to pay for its production...

Our goal is to produce this unique and beautiful film outside of the typical Hollywood studio system where we believe that you, the audience, would never be allowed to enjoy this brilliant work the way it was originally conceived.

Wait. You're telling me that after Community, Harmon might not want to deal with a major studio on something? Crazy talk! (Still: I have to imagine pros like Kaufman and Harmon have enough connections that they could probably get this independently funded, on their own, in the manner they want it to be, without having to turn to Kickstarter—but maybe they tried that, and maybe they couldn't. And, as Graeme McMillan points out over at ComicsAlliance, it's not like there aren't more dubious Kickstarters out there.)

ANYWAY. I'd watch the hell out of this, as I suspect many of you would; I also imagine it'll have no trouble at all crowdfunding its $200,000 budget. And the Kickstarter video suggests that if Anomalisa is successful, they'll make more stop-motion films... with people like Harmon and, oh, you know, Louis CK. So yeah. Might be worth checking out.

Thanks to Jamie S. Rich for the heads up. The "S" stands for Starburns!
