When the Mercury offices were located off of Sandy in Northeast, the closest coffeeshop was the largely terrible Black Sheep Bakery (shut up, vegans). Now that we've moved downtown—to be closer to social services—Black Sheep's cafe space has been taken over by Portland Farmers Market staple Fressen, which serves up Bavarian pretzels and pretzel rolls, sandwiches, pastries, and more. This morning I had one of the best croissants I've ever had in Portland—topped with the same salt they use on their pretzels—plus a cup of Ristretto coffee, and I'll definitely be back to try out more of their pastries. Here's their endearingly useless website.
