It's one of those days that makes me wish I could believe in God. Instead, I spent the lunch hour crying into my sandwich.

This morning's shooting had an exceptionally high death toll, but from The Nation comes this heart-stopping list of all the other mass shootings in the United States this year. In some ways, this is a one-off, senseless act. In other ways, it's a pattern. Sixteen mass shootings occurred in America just this year.

Unless you want to say fuck everything, there has to be some way to stop this pattern. Helpful or not, what some politicians, like Oregon's Ginny Burdick, are talking about is making it harder to for people to get assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. For the coming legislative session, Senator Burdick has introduced a bill to ban high-capacity magazines in the state.

In the meantime, if you're looking for somewhere to go to express your grief, today at 7pm there will be a candlelight vigil at Clackamas Town Center honoring the victims of this week's shooting at the mall.
