On Halloween night, the Mercury and Mississippi Studios kicked off Ear Candy, a totally free series of shows of great up-and-coming Portland bands. And Ear Candy continues this Sunday, with the exciting second installment! This month's theme is bands with singing drummers—actually, it wasn't planned, it just kind of worked out that way—so we've got Still Caves and Night Mechanic on tap. These are both excellent rock bands that you've gotta see; read our 2012 article on Still Caves here and our one on Night Mechanic from a few months ago here.

Still Caves took some time off from playing shows, but they're back with a vengeance. Their excellent 2012 tape Static Lips is up on Bandcamp; take a listen here. Still Caves make eerie but reassuring lo-fi gems that assuredly rock, but not in the typical garage-rock way you might be expecting.

And Night Mechanic released the absolutely splendid Working Late album this year—if you haven't heard it yet, what are you waiting for? Night Mechanic has been working on some new material recently, and they've got some corking good demos up on Soundcloud. These were recorded in the basement of the bass player, and two of the songs ("Child" and "3.2.1.") will be on their next record. The third, "Wolf" is an unreleased oldie just for fun. Here's the jaggedly catchy "3.2.1." and head over to Soundcloud for "Child" and "Wolf."

God, I love these bands. Did I mention the show's free? So yeah, you'll want to get to Mississippi Studios on Sunday night—Still Caves and Night Mechanic together makes for a bill of local music that's as good as it gets. See you there!
