Remember late last year when I wrote about how silly naming contests are? Me too. Ah, good times.

Anyway, I made a couple excellent points, most importantly that Portland Thunder is a terrible name for our new Arena Football team because there's no Thunder in Portland and there's already a professional sports team called Thunder. I blamed Portlanders for voting for such a boring name. Turns out, I was wrong. Portlanders came through voting overwhelmingly for much better like Portland Sasquatch. But the people's votes were tossed out by team owner Terry Emmert.

John Canzano over at the Oregonian confirmed that Thunder didn't even make the top 10 in the vote. Emmert defended the decision by saying, "The contest was legit. We never said that the name that gets the most votes wins." Ohhhhhh, it was one of those "legit" contests where getting the most votes doesn't win! Our bad for not clarifying the rules.

So Portland, I'm sorry I underestimated you. Turns out you're better at naming sports teams than I gave you credit for. And you're way better than Terry Emmert.
