For those who regularly read I Love Television™, you'll know I've been singing the praises of HBO's True Detective for some time now:

The show revolves around two Louisiana detectives (Motherfreaking McConaughey, along with the also-great Woody Harrelson) and their hunt for a creepy serial killer. The show hops through time, from 1995 (when the pair are going to extreme lengths to crack the case), to the present day (when they're being questioned about their questionable actions). Motherfreaking McConaughey's character is a revelation; a deeply troubled and wounded detective whose past life as a drug-abusing undercover cop haunts his present, alienating him from his partner—and making everyone suspect he has a little too much in common with the evil he's pursuing.

Next week is the show's season finale, when we will finally find out who who the serial murderer(s) is (are), and perhaps the identity of the "Yellow King"—but already I'm hearing a lot of nervous chatter from invested viewers who are (maybe legitimately) concerned that the ending of True Detective will be a bunch of supernatural malarkey or trickery. Well, I'm here today to tell you, you're probably wrong. Why? Because creator Nic Pizzolatto says so. From an interview with The Daily Beast:

“I’ve enjoyed reading people theorize about what’s going to happen because it’s a sign that you’re connecting,” Pizzolatto told me. “But I’m also sort of surprised by how far afield they’re getting. Like, why do you think we’re tricking you? It’s because you’ve been abused as an audience for more than 20 years. I cannot think of anything more insulting as an audience than to go through eight weeks, eight hours with these people, and then to be told it was a lie—that what you were seeing wasn’t really what was happening. The show’s not trying to outsmart you.”

If you geek out on True Detective theories, you should definitely check out the rest of this article as well, in which author Andrew Romano, delves deep into the show's mythology and comes up with a pretty good theory about how the entire thing will end. DO YOU HAVE A THEORY, or perhaps just a general observation about the show? Leave it in the comments—but if you haven't seen the show yet, then stay away! Spoilers ahoy!
