If you work in the inner east Burnside area, you wear through your lunch and dinner options pretty quickly. Burnside Brewing Co.—who just released their Couch Select Lager in handy canned form, as you can see below—are locally famous for their duck fat-griddled burger, but their big and bright space, as well as above-and-beyond-for-a-brewery-bar menu, makes them a must-hit. Any other week, go in for hanger steak or beer-butt chicken and a pint, but during Burger Week, the only sensible option is the three-course meal you see below, in which their $5 burger stars:

Burnside Brewings $5 All American Burger. Couch lager and shot not included.
  • Chris Onstad
  • Burnside Brewing's $5 All American Burger. Couch lager and shot not included.

They sear this quarter-pound, grain-finished beef patty in Wagyu ("American-style Kobe beef") fat, and dress it up with the serious iceberg crunch, raw onion heat, and vinegary pickle of a proper-traditional backyard burger. Secret sauce and an unapologetically perfect slice of old-school melted American cheese bring its rich char into full nostalgic glory.

This is a $5 burger that won't slow you down in the middle of a workday...unless that's your goal, in which case you can get outside of a lager or three and take in what's left of summer from one of their many comfortable, well-shaded, Burnside-facing tables.

The Portland Mercury would like to thank our partners once again this year, world-class meat provider Nicky USA, Widmer Brothers Brewing, and Jim Beam Kentucky Fire!

Important reminder: THESE BURGERS WILL SELL OUT. Last year’s restaurants had one main issue with the event last year, and that was people getting angry and rude when they found out that they are part of a reality where restaurants that are getting slammed run out of food. We have better forecasting numbers this year, but please: go early, be kind, get a drink, and, most importantly, a $5 burger is a privilege, not a right. You know what someone who acts like a horse’s ass is? Hint: It has two enormous buttocks and large poops fall out of the middle.
