It might not be fair to call the upcoming Modest Mouse album Portland's own Chinese Democracy, as it hasn't been THAT long: Strangers to Ourselves comes out March 3, 2015 and will be the group's first full-length album since We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank came out in March 2007. (A stopgap EP, No One's First and You're Next, came out in 2009.) Still, people have been waiting nearly eight years, a pretty long time for Modest Mouse to return with a new album. Perhaps the wind-up seems even longer, as the group has been steadily premiering new songs in their live show for many months now, and the rumor mill over the past few years has included reports of both Big Boi and Krist Novoselic working with the band on new material. Those guest appearances haven't been confirmed with the news of Strangers to Ourselves' upcoming release. In fact, details are scant. Little is known beyond the album's title, release date, and label (Epic); meanwhile, advance single "Lampshades on Fire" comes out tomorrow and can be heard over at The Current.

The song itself is a very Modest Mouse-y sounding track, a slightly funky dance-rocker with lots of vocal overdubs, a couple dynamic shifts, some synth squiggles, and a glowing electric piano at the forefront. It's a fine if unsurprising song from the Issaquah-to-Portland band—take a listen.
