There are a pair of noteworthy record releases that didn't make their way into the brand-new print edition of your Portland Mercury this week. And by records, I mean vinyl. Turntables on!

Rolling Through the Universe
  • Rolling Through the Universe
Local sludge/doom band Rolling Through the Universe has been around town for six years and has earned many notices across the country and overseas, but has yet to get a ton of local ink. Their second album, Lethe, is named after the mythical Greek river of forgetfulness (huh, the Greeks say "Lethe," I say "whiskey"), and it's receiving its vinyl release tonight. You can get a taste of their roaring, roiling prog/doom metal by listening below, but for the full effect, it's best to check out Lethe on 180g vinyl (issued by Hidden Temple Records) with the full cover art by Sean Schock. Rolling Through the Universe kick offs a small Northwest tour with a free show tonight at Kenton Club, where you can get your hands on the vinyl for the first time. They'll be joined by Denver band Abrams and local band High Praise, which includes members of Gaytheist.

Marriage + Cancer
  • Marriage + Cancer
Marriage + Cancer have a new 7-inch jointly released by Dirt Cult Records and Bulkhead Records. The Portland band, which assembled from the ashes of the spellcheck-beguiling Nucular Aminals, put solid new tracks on either side of the record, with the chiming, triumphant "Killjoy" ingeniously offset by the uneasy, haunted-house B-side "Nothing's Wrong When Nothing's Real." Soaked in blotter-paper reverb, both tunes are seductive and ominous, a fine summation of what Marriage + Cancer has been up to over the past few months. Looking forward, M+C celebrate the 7-inch's release with a show at the Know this Saturday night (October 24) with Low Culture and Dark/Light. After that, they hit the road for a West Coast tour that stretches through November.
