I can't decide whether music is beer for the ears or beer is music for the soul, but I know there aren't enough marriages of the two. Where the Mercury's own Malt Ball—which partners Oregon brewers with local musicians—makes perfect sense, McMenamins' second annual Sabertooth Micro Fest is now getting its companion brewfest, Blasphemous, and this weekend-long production is all about getting weird. Or, as they put it, it's a “PsychedelicStonerRockMicroFest.”

Sounds-wise, tonight's headliners are Super Furry Animals, tomorrow's is Red Fang and Sunday's is Built to Spill. No bands to sneeze at. But I'm the beer writer, and suds-wise, Blasphemous Brew Fest's lineup features Portlanders Breakside, Cascade, Upright, and McMenamins' own Crystal Brewery, whose brewer, Drew Phillips, is the driving force behind Blasphemous. Two additional McMenamins breweries—Thompson Brewery in Salem and the big daddy Edgefield Brewery in Troutdale—are also contributing kegs. Perhaps the crowning jewel, though, is Ale Apothecary, the reclusive nanobrewery from Bend whose bottle-conditioned wild ales are hard to come by, but will be pouring in abundance both Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The wildest part of the beer line-up? It's a crap shoot. I know some of the beers that will be available, but not all. Attendees just have to accept that it's been expertly curated. There will be a keg of Cascade's Date Night, a sour spiced quadruple ale with rum-soaked dates created by Cascade blender and former McMenamins brewer Mark Goodwin. Breakside's sending a keg of the Pathfinder, a dry-hopped beer that's been aged in Old Tom gin barrels—and Breakside always pulls off miracles with such casks. As for one of the Ale Apothecary offerings, prepare to get Ralphed. Ralph, which I've never seen on any PDX bottle-shop shelves, is a spontaneously fermented ale with white fir tips, aged in pinot noir barrels. Since bottles tend to cost upwards of $30, it alone is worth the price of admission.

The beer portion of Sabertooth will take place in Lola's Room while the bouncy dance floor of the Crystal Ballroom hosts the bands upstairs.
