On Tuesday night a fairly massive crowd squeezed into the cellar at the Doug Fir for the always popular Unmentionable lingerie show. As long time fans know, Unmentionable is not only one of the most revealing shows of the season, but also one of the most fun and unique with a strong emphasis on body positivity, and a varied selection of collections ranging from casual ready-wear to exclusive luxury. Producers Cassie Ridgeway of Altar Boutique and Elizabeth Mollo of Elizabeth Mollo Productions (who, full disclosure are both Merc contributors) did not disappoint with this year's lineup.

First up was Vava Lingerie, whose darkly romantic collection was made up of luxe red velvet and totally sheer black lace. Naturally, it had all the vamp and sex appeal one could hope for; with a few high-waisted looks adding a little understated modesty to the mix.

MUCH MORE AFTER THE JUMP!>>>

Next up was knitwear designer Piper Dalton, whose line is manufactured locally using hand fabricated natural fibers. The collection was made up of rich, soft loungewear and intimates in a warm, neutral palate. Ease, comfort and luxury were the obvious principles of this collection and they were incorporated into every piece. I would have, however, liked to see a lighter jersey, or something along with all the dense wool, just for some variety.

Smith River was up next with some Dynasty-style opulence complete with jewel-tone embroidery and gold lame. The aesthetic was definitely retro, but the relatively paired down silhouettes made it feel current and original. There were a few styling choices - a blazer paired with a one-piece for instance - that I didn't understand, but the clothes were fun and beautifully crafted.

North Carolina-based WhiskeyDog's collection consisted of beautifully hand-printed florals in a super-easy stretch-jersey. WhiskeyDog's clothes are all made by hand, and that translates to impeccable fit.

Iconic local sock-makers Sock It To Me showed their new line of matching underwear for both women and men. Naturally, this meant all their beloved wacky prints—comic books, pre-IPO startups valued at $1 billion or more, bacon, etc.—for more than just our feet. The collection also had, hands down, the most creative use of bra cups.

Plus-size line Chubby Cartwheels is known for their beautifully hand-sewn lingerie and ready wear that always brings equal parts vintage sex-appeal and cheeky fun. This collection did not disappoint, with classic pin-up silhouettes in a surprising mix of pastel pink, black and green velvet. A vivid rose print felt both familiar and original in how it was incorporated into this collection.

Lille Boutique's collection was all about understated elegance in the form of sheer lace. Silhouettes were simple and classic, so focus was drawn to the intricate detailing and exquisite construction.

Next up was Ridgeway's Altar Houseline, whose familiar boho aesthetic took an edgier turn with a collection done entirely in sheer black mesh. The material made often traditionally modest silhouettes feel much more daring, allowing for some really interesting experimentation with cut. A dragon print added another layer of attitude and sophistication.

The headliner of the night was Austin, Texas based Katastrophic Clothing, whose collection consisted of elegant, but un-fussy separates in a color palate ranging from sorbet brights to all black. The line incorporates sophisticated tie-dyes, which are at the same time vibrant and understated, into many of their designs. The collection felt accessibly chic, with an emphasis on flawless fit.
