Closing This Week

The Portland Opera's most recent productions have, despite the uninspiring atmosphere provided by the Keller Auditorium, given the illusion of a big-city opera company. But Macbeth reminds us that it is, in fact, just the Portland Opera. The choreography seems amateurish, the cast (excluding Pamela South as Lady Macbeth) is unmemorable, and aside from a brilliant ever-changing forest scene, the video-projected "sets" are eye-straining to the point of discomfort. PO's orchestra, however, is flawless as always and, with Verdi, can't go wrong. WILL GARDNER Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, 790-ARTS, Thurs, Sat 7:30 pm, $37-133

The Love of the Nightingale
Theater Vertigo brings a deft, post-modern sensibility to The Love of the Nightingale, a retelling of the myth of Philomele. AH Theater! Theatre!, 3430 SE Belmont, 286-3456, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, closes Feb 11, $15
