YAY!! Excellent news! Thanks Patrick. That made my day! I can't believe I'm so old now that I'm this excited about the opening of a grocery store I can easily walk/bike to.
2
I guess you must be pretty stinking old then, since you're apparently unable to drag yr creaky ass bones just a few blocks to Fred Meyer's. Or maybe Fred's doesn't carry yr preferred brand of sustainably local organic metamucil and adult diapers?
3
Will Seasons even be stocking anything that Daily Grind didn't? I say prepare the rocks and man the Molotovs. No good can come of this.
4
Right on!

Cool. While New Seasons is a big business, it's our (Portland"s) big business and I wish them well. I think that area of Hawthorne, however, may be a hard market. First, Fred Meyers is pretty close. Second, as the above poster shows, idiots will blame New Seasons for the demise of Daily Grind. Daily Grind failed because it was a crappy store which time had passed by. In its prime the Grind was one of the better organic groceries in Portland (though it was also run by religious wing-nuts for many, many years. Not everyone remembers the Daily Grind was started by fundamentalist Christians.)But that was in its time, this is now. Last, can New Seasons please just make one decent parking lot? We can't all ride CleverCycles everywhere...

I'm in favor of New Seasons in principle, but the one on Division is an absolute fucking nightmare to walk around. I've never had a stronger urge to rip baby papooses, pull off+head-smack with Birkenstocks, or piss in biologically active milk. The should start a new in-store magazine down there: Sanctimonious.
7
funny thing about new season's parking lots. they solicited input from dozens of customers regarding the seven corners' parking lot and gave them three options 1. leave the lot alone, 2. change the lot for better navigation (but would end up losing spaces) or 3. come up with your own brilliant idea. the results were split 1/3 saying leave it. 1/3 saying change it and 1/3 offering their own bright (but apparently not feasible) ideas.

"This is particularly good news for those of you on Hawthorne who’ve had to travel all the way to Clinton Street..." This also good news for those of us who live near the Division store, then. I'm with Matt on this, I love the store but I think I'm the only one there to just shop and get the hell out, not spend all fucking afternoon there.
9
Dear Jake, I said EASILY. I do shop at Fred Meyer but I don't enjoy the intersection of 39th & Hawthorne.
10
I, for one, am glad that all these whiny people will not be shopping at this new store. Man, I wish I was edgy enough to shop at Safeway, but I just don't have it in me anymore.
11
I like New Seasons because they deliver to our apartment. I've never been inside one.
12
The division st store is way sanctimonious, asshole ridden. perhaps this new store will help such matters. then again, isn't Portland pretty much an asshole ridden, sanctimonious 25 year old graphic designer from the midwest who only eats 'organic'?
13
Tonya, believe me, I feel your pain. 4 way intersections are just so difficult to navigate I'm not really sure why I ever leave the house at all. And those stinky car fumes from the Jiffy Lube! Landsakes! Agreed on the Division NS--an annoying store to be sure--they really do seem to have the most homogenous and irritating customer base of all the stores. That said though, I like buying meat at NS.
14
hey jake, you're a jerk.
15
I've been wondering what was going to happen to that space. I used to shop at Daily Grind. Not for everything but they had great bulk items and I can't stand Freddie's. I usually bike down to New Seasons on Divison now, or sometimes I'm in the car. Funny, I've always thought their parking lots were terrible. Jake - what's with giving Tonya a hard time? Some people are uneasy on a bike in busy congested traffic areas. So she's happy to have a New Seasons close to her. You're just an arrogant a**hole. Read her posts again and then read yours, you idiot.
16
Hey Tonya, I think a little action might help you loosen up a bit. You know, pulling the ole depends aside and rubbing some lube around.
17
7 corners NS used to be okay before the Wild Oats up the street closed. 7 corners NS used to be okay before it turned from a Red Apple to a NS. 7 corners NS used to be okay before every trustafarian from Ann Arbor to Madison moved to Portland. 7 corners NS used to be okay before my ex-girlfriend stopped working there and i stopped getting a 20% discount. 7 corners NS used to be okay before i started hating, for no reason that i can fathom, that one guy that wears all the mascara.
18
Tommy boy, It's called having a sense of humor. You know, they really are pretty nice & useful. You should maybe hop on your bicycle, pedal on over to 7 corners and pick a locally sustainable naturally organic one up. Or if you're lucky, the guy with the mascara will be handing out free samples of 'em. And make sure to ride down Clinton for safety's sake--that Division sure is busy!
19
Oh shut the fuck up, you fucking idiots. More important issues are at hand. Tape on the street needs to be ripped up!!!
20
Jake I spent ten years as a full-time bike messenger, five years in San Francisco & five in Boston. I have no fears of any of the Portland streets and am more than likely to pass you by, so less of your condescending attitude. I was referring to Tonya and others who aren't as comfortable riding on busy streets as you obviously are. Your humor is also condescending. Humor is supposed to be funny, you know, something to laugh at. You are not funny. Seriously. Not funny at all. Re-read your posts, they aren't funny man, they're pathetic.
21
yay! new season may be pricey, but you get what you pay for. i'll always miss daily ground, but everytime i shopped there, some produce item wound up being inedible and non-returnable. anyway, what's going on with upper hawthorne? first pizza scholl's, then albina press, now coming up porque no, and then new seasons.
22
Where the EFF is my New Season's downtown muthafuhckiz?
23
No tom, what's pathetic is that at 10:18 PM you have nothing better to do than anonymously pick fights with words on a computer screen and make stuff up about your glorious life as a bike messenger. I always have better things to do, like recalling fond memories of my time as a Green Beret liberating Kabul. On a bike (a fixie!)
24
"The plan is to demolish the old Daily Grind building and build a new two story 'green' structure" That is entirely unsustainable in every sense of the word... then again, that information seems to be absent from their press release and a Business Journal article, so I'm a bit confused.
25
Yay. I really think that, outside of the farmers' markets, New Seasons has the best produce in town ... both in terms of general quality and the percentage that's organic and/or relatively local. Plus, the general volume and variety of fresh produce outclasses most other groceries. And New Seasons' prices aren't as cheap as Safeway, but they're a lot better than Whole Foods ... I live within an easy walk of the new eastside Whole Foods, and I'll stroll there when I just need a few items. But really, New Seasons is where I go for fruit & veggies. (I'll admit preferring Trader Joe's for packaged goods & cheese, since their prices are better and they tend to be pretty good too, but I don't get there as often.) I currently go to the New Seasons on Division at least once a week, and I don't get why people think the customers there are "sanctimonious." Really? I've never gotten a lecture or dirty look from customers or employees. (Even once when I accidently dropped my coffee by the tomatoes ... other people were like, "Oh, that sucks!" and an employee was like: "Let me get you a new one for free!")
26
(Now I feel compelled to add that no actual coffee splashed the tomatoes ... it was on the floor.) I never liked the old Daily Grind, really. THAT place seemed sanctimonious (and a bit dank).
27
I think Jack Bog scooped you on January 10, 2008. No wonder he is the enemy.
28
My biggest problem with the customers at Seven Corners is the asshats who like to take up the entire aisle with their carts, seemingly on purpose because OBVIOUSLY they're the only person shopping there of any importance and all others should have to wait for them. C'mon people, the aisles are tiny and you are in the United States, where it's polite to stay to the right (this goes for sidewalks too FYI!!!). I for one am glad for another shopping option in the area. Since Trimet has not yet figured out that SE 20th/21st really needs bus service, I will be able to get home from this NS with a load of groceries with a lot more ease

Brandon From the forwarded e-mail, sent to New Seasons employees yesterday by Lisa Sedlar and Brian Rohter: "We expect that we’ll be taking down the old structure that’s there now and will be putting up a new two story, green building, that will be approximately 14,000 square feet. That means the store will be about the same size as Sellwood--just the perfect fit for the Hawthorne neighborhood ."
30
Many times when I'm in the Seven Corners location I get the distinct feeling that I'm the only one in the entire store who isn't really, really high.
31
Thanks Patrick
32
Though ... a two-story grocery store? Will they have a whole bank of elevators for people to ride with their carts, or maybe one of those carts + people escalators a la Target?
33
Lisa—a few of the stores are already two stories, with office, employee break room, and back stock space upstairs. This is true at the Division, Interstate and NE 33rd stores, if I'm remembering correctly (definitely true at Division). Two stories of produce and SAMPLES would be pretty kick ass, though.
34
We live near upper Hawthorne, and are THRILLED to have such an amazing grocery blocks from our house. Have you lived in other cities, shopped at their grocery stores? I don't think there's a better grocery in the US! Welcome, New Seasons!
35
I would just like to point out that it's a common misconception that New Seasons is more expensive than Safeway. I personally have done some price comparisons of products such as Fresh Mozzarella cheese, and have found Safeway is usually the same or higher on most items. I'm not trying to say that New Seasons is cheap, just that Safeway has an undeserved reputation as being lower in cost.

Please wait...
