Mansfield was Senate majority leader for most of the 60s and 70s, and highly respected. From 1962 onward, he spoke out against US involvement in Vietnam and played a key role in getting Nixon to withdraw troops. He introduced the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
