We have Curly Wurlys at the Market Of Choice on Terwilliger.
2
The Mercury probably shouldn't even weigh in on this subject, since your news staff and editor are implicated in it.

Whether or not Amy and Humpy are ultimately charged with a crime, your news reporting is certainly tainted.
3
@Euphonius: Yeah I'm worried that Wm is going to at least get investigated for the Danny Gans murder too. But as far as I know, Amy had nothing to do with it. I wouldn't exactly say that the reporting is tainted by that, but whatever...

Matt Davis has called Victoria Taft 33 times because he's a news reporter. Reporters make lots of phone calls. Adams was a City Council member... why would he be making 33 calls to a 17 year old? Look, I don't think he should resign either, but let's not pretend like he wasn't macking on a high school kid. Plus, if you listen to the Willamette Week interview the Oregonian just posted, it makes my skin crawl to here Adams lying through his teeth.
5
Last time I was at Belmont Station, they had a box of Curly Wurley's.
6
I actually couldn't care less about him dry-humping studs in the city bathroom; more power to him. But he really is a horrible mayor making horrible decisions. I started to feel buyer's remorse after the 12-lane issue, but after this attempt to ramrod a multi-million soccer deal through with little oversight, discussion, or examination, I'm really done with him.

At a time when the city budget is cutting basic services like street repair, I don't think we need to be lending a helpful fucking hand to multi-millionaires so they can make more money.
7
The Devil you know...

It is great to have buyers remorse, it indicates that you are thinking seriously about the issues and care about your leader, but way back in the day before the scandal wasn't Sam the ONLY serious candidate? I would rather have a green horny-old-man/letcher than a self-serving "we want tax breaks for businesses and I don't really have another platform...oh wait Sam has a green platform? Just cut and paste what ever Sam's platform is and that will be my platform too" mayor. Besides, we don't know what Sho would have lied about considering he lied about numerous other issues that impacted the city. (why do people forget that the only other choice was a man who didn't pay his taxes? As a business owner I know the burden of taxes is a big one, especially in an economic downturn where the tax structure doesn't change rapidly enough to reflect the actual income of a business, but when you run for mayor you have to be perfect.)

I may disagree about the choices of stadium location but he actually has been doing a decent job given the circumstances. How much public money has been spent asking the same stupid question about where his member has been lobbying? Does it really matter in the context of things? Besides, there are a million stories that need coverage and the O doesn't give them the time of day because they desperately need readers to keep their paper afloat. What is more interesting, a fen restoration or a sex scandal? What is more important to the livability of Portland?

C,

Respectfully, I would like to point out that there would have been more viable candidates if Sam Adams would not have resorted to lies, cover-ups, negative and deceptive campaigning.

Please see exhibit A: http://www.commissionersam.com/node/2801

Not only did Sam's blatant lie of an 'open letter to Portlanders' (which the media willfully retold) decimate Mr. Ball (who is in no way affiliated with the Recall), but it also sent a very strong message to others potential candidates (who could have received VOE funds) not to run against Sam... or else.

Any study of political sciences knows that the best way to get elected in our current winner takes all system is to make sure you have no viable candidates running against you. For Exhibit B please look at your current ballot for the City and County sham of an Auditors election. Democracy relies on many candidates with different ideas for the electorate to choose from.

One of the most egregious civic transgressions of Sam's is how he diabolically lied and masterfully prevented other viable candidates from running against him.

People often ask me, what will happen when Sam resigns or is recalled (sadly his Ego will force it to be the latter). My response is always the same, we need to pressure the city council to allow time (more than 90 days) for the citizens to truly have a choice in who we elect. My suggestion is that the 4 city commissioners hold the election for mayor in the May primary of 2010. This will save the city money and increase voter turnout from having a special election during the holiday season. It will also allows citizens the opportunity to truly vet who our next mayor will be.

Sam Adams is not the only person who believes in keeping our city sustainable and livable. A group of new leader will emerge and with ample time the citizens of Portland will elect one of them.

Standard Disclaimer: The Recall is in no way affiliated with anyone seeking to run for mayor or has ran against Sam Adams. We will not endorse or support any candidates who seek to replace Adams.

Coed heads in City Hall, Matt?
10
C,
We have just had eight years of the most disastrous leadership in over a century. Isn't this the time for all of us to wake up and realize that actually, we CAN elect honest, capable people?!
Portlanders will express love of our great and unique city by rejecting this shoddy, provincial sociopath of a "mayor" in just a few months. Won't you help?
11
I'm sure that, if an elected official bribed a journalist with a city job to keep a story quiet, that's probs illegal, but would Amy have done anything illegal if that was the case? That's not a rhetorical question. I genuinely don't know and am curious.

The O is lame, but Sam seems to have done far more damage in office than good and I certainly won't support him anymore, in the face of a recall. But I still don't agree with removing him from office for the lie, on general principle.

CUUUUUUURLLYYYYYY WUUUUUUUUUUURYS!!!

Cadbury and the BBC. Two awesome British exports. Okay, I guess we can add Matt to that list, for that snowgasm vid, if nothing else.
12
I've got no complaints about the sex, as I've said before. I am upset about the 12 lanes and the ball player bailout, as I've said before. However, if he resigns, Randy would be mayor. And Randy is a bigger cheerleader for those projects than Sam is. So if you care about those things, that isn't a reason for Sam to resign, that is actually a reason for Sam NOT to resign because at least he is slowing those things down more than Randy would. Likewise, I have to agree with C here, if there are better candidates out there, where are they?

(Maybe we could get Bub Clark back, he was great, he did a lot of great things, but keep in mind that he was also the person that got the convention center built. Guess what? You aren't always going to agree with the Mayor, and that is life.)
13
Randy will never be mayor. Randy's political career is over, unless he does some VERY successful somersaulting and realistic metamorphosing, which I seriously doubt he is capable of. After all, he was pushing for a neon blinking rose to be planted on a building while the whole city was reeling. Reeling over 12 lane roads, MLS, baseball, a platinum hotel, wrecking of a huge architectural monument, not to mention the dizzying GALL of someone in Adams' postition to just act completely oblivious to the fact that he will be recalled....

We're all done with guys like Randy and Sam. A great leader will come out of this or at least a decent one will. Avanti!
14
@gentorio

Randy's political career is over? hahahahaha.

You really don't know much about Portland politics do you? As long as he's running I'd put a fifty on him being reelected and it won't even get past the primary.

History lesson: Tom Potter literally did nothing for 4 years. It took me 5 minutes to remember what the name of his biggest project even was (VisionPDX). If he had run again he would have run in an unopposed election. Keep in mind he literally did *nothing* for 4 entire years and would have strolled back into the Mayor's seat. Vera Katz shoved things down people's throats constantly. The only opposition she ever really had was a kid. But sure...keep telling yourself Randy's vulnerable.
15
Ya'll could have voted for me, but whatever.
16
For clarification: The whole "Randy would be mayor" line is not true.

If Adams is recalled, or resigns, there are several likely candidates for the position. Latest rumors: Metro Regional Council President David Bragdon, County Chair Ted Wheeler, and Former Mayoral Candidate and Mercury endorsee, Jim Fransesconi.

It's general consensus that Leonard wouldn't run, or stand much of a chance, in a run for mayor of Portland. The rumor for him as a run for governor. Even though he says he loves his current job.
17
Matt, you really have no idea how the whole recall thing works, do you?
18
(ps: that last comment mainly addresses your recent content, Matt, so far as I could unravel it. Your grammar is completely incomprehensible.
19
)
20
And until that election finishes, (which could be as little as 3 months, but it could be longer with runoffs, lawsuits, etc,) then the council president, (that would be Randy Leonard,) is effectively the Mayor...
21
Blacked out,

Politics will never be the same as it was- too much has changed in the past six months. Suddenly, people can no longer afford to tune out the whole question of politics. Our disastrous engagement in the middle east, the economic collapse, the gravitation of the country, against all predicted odds, toward a new kind of thinker and communicator (Obama), all indicate that the country is ready for better stuff than lies and bullshit.

Here's why people will not be interested in Leonard. He swaggers. He picks fights. He gives a shit about what other people think. Does this REMIND you of someone? He acted all furious with Sam, denounced him publically, and then turned around and said, "well, the only thing he did wrong was lie, people would have been just fine with the teen boyfriend thing, and the only people complaining are people who voted for Sho..." But wait, I guess he never imagined that people who want their vote for Sam back (me, eg) might get extremely pissed off to hear him say that? And don't get me started on his calling a huge monument to the people who gave their lives to save Europe a "big fat white elephant sitting in my living room." Fuck.

He's an insensitive business as usual politician, and WE ARE ONTO HIM, along with his proclaimed "soulmate", Mr A.

@genetorio

Jebus man. I have one relative I never met that died in Vietnam. One. I went to DC to the Vietnam Memorial to see his name just cause he was my relative and my mother asked me to leave flowers. I got to the spot and there was another vet there in tears mourning someone from the same company as my relative. I hugged a complete stranger and despite my lack of religious belief prayed with him because he asked. That's a memorial. Not that dung heap that's falling apart. Christ! You can't even name ten people on that wall of the top of your head and its a designated smoking area. My grandfather (a Seabee...I have his captured Japanese war maps) would have laughed at you for a memorial like that. Any respectable historian would laugh at the MC as a memorial. It's piss poor and its offensive you're using the veteran argument to want it to keep standing. If you had a pair of stones you'd be asking for something meaningful for Oregonians that have died. I can think of a nice place on Waterfront Park (coincidentally people actually visit Waterfront Park as opposed to the Coliseum which hardly anyone goes to).

Francesconi (full disclosure: I voted for Potter in the primary and Francesconi in the general) had ideas. Potter had nothing. Leonards going to walk to reelection. 2008 changed nothing in Portland. If anything people will care less because we won with Obama, Merkley, we took the House and Senate in Oregon and DC. Nobody gives a frack about local PDX politics. It's nice you are really up in arms but I hate to break the news to you...you're alone. There aren't many like me or you that pay attention to off election year politics. Have fun screaming in comment boards. You'll be ignored when Randy is up for reelection. I made a sandwich tonight. It was delicious. That's basically how your comment section is going to go to regular voters...who honestly never look at places like Blogtown or BlueOregon, or the Willamette Week. Considering how many subscriptions the Big O has lost I would assume most of the city doesn't give a rip about that. That's why I laugh at Wurster and his dark forces recall buddies. I've been around too long and seen them before. They smooched some knobs in the local press...the local press is reciprocating and when it all comes down to it the story isn't there so they abandon it. Unless Kroger indicts the Adams recall is dead.

P.S. Honey I thought it was delicious how you said Sam and Leonard were soulmates. OMG you are so onto him. Phlebaw....wait...did I just wake up and pretend the American public changed themselves out of ignoring anything politically for roughly 20 years?

Wait...I'll bet you don't even know how Bud Clark killed his own political career do you? Ok...history...he got sued by the female police chief for saying tits up so many times it was too much for her to handle. She sued the city for sexual harassment...the courts threw it out. Clark and the city were acquitted. He walked out to the reporters and media folks and said, "tits up." Walked off and that was the show folks. I gave Bud Clark a high five and woop woop last week. I love the reuben at Goose Hollow.
23
You're all scumbags. I'll see you all in hell.
24
I love the "there might not be a better canidate" logic. If that crappy excuse for a Mayor is the best Portlands got then it should just fold now. Obviously with a high unemployment rate there are many good canidates for the job and they most likely will not be sexual predators.

Prior to reading these lame posts I was actually enjoying my GF toast, now not so much.

Oh and hearing Amy Ruiz act like some low budget Attorney (on the SA tape) was disturbing. Talk about foot stomping and not getting your Curly Wurly. You could just hear her pouting...why was she even there?
25
Tell me, Blacked out, were one of the people that said Obama could never win?

And I cannot believe that something rich and beautiful and FUN and inspiring cannot be made out of the MC. There has lacked the political will to do anything like that because we have people like Leonard running things.

Do you know that the pools in Portland are so overcrowded that basically the Parks limit access to kids by making the pools only available to them after 7 pm, when most kids are doing homework and having dinner? (and they make a few hours available during the day, which HAPPEN to coincide with school and pre-school hours?) And on the weekends kids can't use the pools until 1 pm?

Why the fuck would we put all this money into wrecking the Coliseum to build a baseball stadium so people can sit around and eat hotdogs a few times a year, instad of using public resources to promote recreation that actually is valuable to the health and welfare of citizens, and is usable on rainy days?

What about the fact that it rains here and there's almost nothing for kids to do? There's OMSI, which is like a sardine can on off-school hours. Why couldn't the MC be a world-class indoor arboretum? people love cacti and carnivorous plants and all the cool stuff that they have in the arboretum in SEATTLE, or the butterfly garden in VICTORIA, but appear to lack here in Portland.

If the MC is really so unviable, for God's sake, start the conversation and design around the new memorial, and DON'T talk about baseball in the same breath.

These people are such idiots it is truly breathtaking.

The more controversy the press can manufacture around Adams, the more money they can make. They are desperate. If Adams is recalled or resigns, there will be an election. An election means press coverage and campaign ads in the press. Money. Competition, changes in technology and declining relevancy has driven the press to getting it first rather than right and sensational over informative. The O and the WW are claiming that every City move is somehow tied up with a male model to sell papers. That is ridiculous - City decisionmaking involves thousands and plans in the works for decades (including every single issue readers note above) - the City is not Sam Adams.

Our pathetic press is constructing a paper tiger of the Breedlove affair rather than a useful discussion of where the City and State economy needs to go. It's poetic in a way, because when we get there, they will be extinct.

28
@Rondine
Your trailer park in West Linn called...they want you to move the toilet bowl back inside.

@genetorio

Our three choices with the MC are to raze it, put up a baseball stadium that will be used roughly 70+ days a year with a financial backer, raze it and let the Blazers do what they want with the property, or let the city spend $50 million plus ongoing maintenance costs to make it an aquatic center/community center.

Sorry...I can build 25 really nice community centers and pools in better locations for city residents with $50 million. Nobody is going to pay politically for anything having to do with the MC property. Sorry to have to break that to you. It's an issue largely ignored by anyone other than a few architects and some bloggers, which most of Portland don't even know exist.
29
The Curly Wurly resembles the Marathon bars of old, how I miss them!!
30
Marathon bar was a Curly Wurly, just rebranded for the US.
31
Ahhhh yes, West Linn Trailer Park, of course thats coming from Blacked Out who lives and works in the Couv...I have google to B*TCH.

Now kindly go back to using the Mercury comment section to write your firt novel, Garrett. You are delusional if you think anyone is getting past the first 475 mind numbing words.
32
@Rondine

I'd love to meet you for coffee. You're my kind of woman. I live in the hipster infested inner SE of Portland. Around Hawthorne and 39th. Lots of headshops around here so the kids can smoke the pot. I block the pay phone from the Chevron you used to call me from so you'll have to find something else. Hugs and snuffles honey.
33
Oh and Rondine it's actually, "I have Google *too* B*tch*." I'm glad they taught you the English language in West Linn where you don't get to vote in Portland elections and are irrelevant in matters relating to Portland.
34
Excuse me, Garrett, I have Google too Bitch, better?

If I wanted to have coffee with a lil crybaby hipsipter like yourself I would hit up your profile on www.hookupwithabrokewhinyhipter.com.
As it stands you will just have to remain content making my coffee. xoxo
35
What the fuck is a hipter? I admire your spunk, Rondine, but you're going to need to bring more than vitriol if you'd like to play with the big kids.

Please wait...
