What a cry baby. Why are we negotiating with a spoiled rich kid who is prone to throw temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way? Merritt Paulson is an embarrassment. Will someone who is actually from Portland please step up and buy the teams from this New York silver-spoon-born hack?
Why does Paulson feel entitled to ANYTHING from the city? Shouldn't he be asking politely for help, with the full expectation that the answer might be "no"?
We seem to be losing sight of the fact that this is a private business man who we owe absolutely nothing. How can one feel entitled to a $40 million stadium? How can one feel entitled to demand where it's located?
I hope I get the chance to pop this guy in the nose sometime.
It's understandable that Paulson would be upset. I also hate it when protracted negotiations with concerned citizens take time away from swimming in my hot tub full of hundred dollar bills.
The other funny thing is that you pretend to be in some position to know that it didn't happen, BlackedOut. You and I know exactly the same amount about what happened.
Anyway, the specifics of this incident are beside the point. My question was: why does Paulson feel entitled to a damn thing from us?
BlackedOut and D obviously have no idea how newspapers and reporting work. Most good stories originally come from unnamed sources... or have they never read "All the President's Men"?
They should stop trying to do Matt's job and stick with their current employment at "Paid Trolls for Paulson."
The funniest thing is the BlackedOut believes he can legitimately attack the credibility of anyone who reveals the truth about his sweet innocent sugar-daddy Merritt Paulson. Are you still reveling in the residual pleasure of that epic pounding he gave you this morning, BlackedOut? He's tall, married, and has an endlessly deep trust fund. Oh yeah, I'm getting hot just thinking about it. So jealous of you, BlackedOut!
I've met Merritt. I know his temperament. If he did flip out he would have had to have been pushed really far. Merritt isn't what I'd call a type A person.
He doesn't feel entitled. He's trying to bring a new major league team here with his own money to play in a city owned facility. He needs the city to put up money to improve their facility. Randy has said for a while if Merritt wants to get rid of baseball the deal is off. So he's trying to get another city owned facility built because he doesn't have the money to just plop one down himself. They came to an agreement where he would guarantee rent and put down $12.5 million and then the architects and the anti-MLS crowd joined forces and killed that deal.
Now Lents is back on the table and like we always knew it's going to cost more than the MC site.
Have fun losing money on the MC until Paul Allen knocks it down.
WTF Chuck, I have no love for Paulson, but "it's rumored" and "is rumored to" is not news credible. After 10 years in news, I think I do have some idea.
And read it again pdxuser, the named source is NOT the source of the tantrum rumor.
I love 'Portland Lover' defaults to homophobic jokes and bluster...the perfect accompaniment to a Matt Davis Hackfest w/ Special Guest Blabby, Matt Davis' wonder comment defender!

"Portland Lover" was most likely referring to Randy's appearance on-stage at last year's Candidates Gone Wild event, where he was indeed dressed like that, with a cute leather jacket and boots, to boot.
Ummm, sorry Bob...not sure what you're talking about.

That has nothing to do with outfits or Leonard, it's just an insecure worm feeling the need to denigrate others sexuality to make themselves feel like more of a man and less of the pathetic worm they actually are. Hey, maybe he and 'Pop him in the Nose' Blabby could hang out and make snarky comments on the internet from their couches together!
They both represent the worst of Portland and of the internet...congrats, guys!
Well, at least they picked the right blog article to do that in...garbage in, garbage out.
Sorry, my mistake. When you mentioned "Portland Lover", I scrolled up to see what the fuss was about and missed his comment but saw the one from "Abusive", and thought that was what you were referring to. Not sure why I missed the attribution.
What a noble guy this Paulson is. Pouring his heart and his hard-earned (oh wait. he was born with it, right?) money into the cause of SPORTS! How about improving public schools? How about the arts? Nah. Sports!
It's nice to know there are people like Will, above, who give all of their money and time to charity like the arts and schools. I wonder how he can afford his computer access or cat upkeep keeping in mind how he must either donate all of his spare money to charity or, of course, be a hypocrite.
Or, is it only people with more money than you who are supposed to do that?
@ Will: Why the hell should arts be more deserving of funding than sports?? They're both there for the entertainment and enjoyment of the people. Yet some people with vast superiority complexes seem to think one is more deserving than the other (typically, the same people who think classical music is inherently superior to rock music just because they happen to enjoy it more).
You can try to make a case for more funding for schools (so long as you acknowledge the regulations about what money can legally be spent on what, something a few other people on here seem incapable of). I've no problem with that. But if you start saying we shouldn't fund sports because it takes money away from arts funding, I call bullsh*t.
You must be fun at a party. Yes let's revel in the hope that this deal falls apart and Portland can hopefully lose basbeball and that dumb sport that the rest of the world plays. That's the spirit!!
Blackedout: "He doesn't feel entitled. He's trying to bring a new major league team here with his own money"
I'm sorry, I thought I just heard you say "with his own money." I couldn't have heard you just say that Paulson is doing this with his own money. Must have misheard you....
I was wondering what that post was all about, I thought somehow you and Blacked out and paulson were pool-hall buddies or something....
As an active mayor-recaller, I have been subject to the "you're a homophobe" crap.
To all those pinhole-apertured brains out there, I offer the words of Margaret Cho, "we are all a little bit gay...."
...and don't forget that some of the most publically and actively homophobia poster-children have been gay men (Charlie Crist, Larry Craig, J. Edgar hoover, etc etc etc).
People are strange. I'm waiting for a mad scientist to invent a virus that targets vile closed-minded human beings and turns them all into engaged, perceptive, interesting angels, like all the people posting on blogtown....
His own money? Or the money he got from his dad, who made it as part of the gang on Wall Street that just sunk our economy?
I was at the meeting Sam ran at the Leftbank, and it was not just architects and anti-MLS people. If anything, they were a minority in that crowd. I think a lot of people don't like the of another corporate development anywhere in central city... razing an architectural landmark to do it just was the icing on that cake.
@BlackedOut I told you I do report my taxes. I've also logged over 300 hours of volunteer time between five different non-profits here in town, in the year that I've been here, mainly Free Geek and SCRAP. FYI.
"I WANT IT NOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"

It's sort of like when Randy said Merritt "stormed" out of their last negotiation...then the next day they had a deal done. Hugs Blabby.
@BlackedOut Don't be silly.
